To Thine Own Self Be Gracious

So let’s talk about something we all dread (well most of us). Weight gain. Bleh. It gets the best of us...from pregnancy, to stress, hormones, illness, you name it. It’s an unwanted visitor...for most. Meh. I was just about a year postpartum..  I was at my pre-pregnancy weight but I just wasn’t excited about how I looked.

So what do you do when you aren’t excited or just plain uncomfortable in the midst of body change?

You embrace it. Be GRACIOUS to yourself and evaluate why you may have gained weight (if it bothers you). Write it down if you have to, but don’t beat yourself up. Oh....I’m talking to myself here. The negative self talk can send you into a spiral and leave you paralyzed. Don’t get me wrong, it was tough for me. I’ve always struggled with my body image. I was the one who was called all the names and sometimes they still ring in my head. I had to remind myself over and over again—you carried a whole human. A WHOLE HUMAN! It took 10 months for your body to get like this, give it time for it to change again...(cause mine didn’t go back even with all the work, lol). But looking back and reflecting, I am more and more amazed and how God created women’s bodies to do some SERIOUS work and what a BLESSING it is to have the honor to carry a child.

So in the midst of your feelings, I challenge you…still find ways to highlight your assets. Remember those? Get some high waist pants (they cover a multitude of sins, yessss God), a fitted dress, and some GOOD UNDERGARMENTS. I can’t stress this enough—it can make or break an outfit.  And if you’re still not satisfied, do something about it.

I joined a gym, started working out 4-5 times a week and made changes to my diet. And I’ve never felt stronger. Have I regressed at times? 🗣 Of course. I’m working through a regression now, but take baby steps. Find a support system, a sister, friend, spouse, anyone to encourage you along the way. And don’t be afraid to ask for help from someone who gets it. A stylist isn’t unattainable or just for the stars. I’m here for you, girl.

Until next time…
